Sweet Potato Pie is a savory pie that can be baked up in the oven, or on the stovetop. It’s made with fingerling potatoes, mashed, and coated in a chutney and cream sauce.  

Ingredients

  • Sweet potatoes, 4 medium 
  • Butter (softened), 1/2 stick 
  • Sugar, 1/4 cup
  • Brown sugar, 3/4 cup 
  • 2 eggs (beaten)
  • Pure vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon 
  • Ground cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Ground ginger, 1/8 teaspoon 
  • Ground nutmeg, 1/8 teaspoon 
  • Ground allspice, 1/8 teaspoon 
  • Salt, 1/2 teaspoon 
  • Evaporated milk, 3/4 cup 
  • Pie crust, 1 unbaked

Maple Whipped Topping:

  • Heavy whipping cream, 1 cup
  • Confectioners’ sugar, 1/4 cup 
  • Maple syrup, 2 tablespoons 

Step By Step Instructions To Make Neelys Sweet Potato Pie

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Step 2

On a baking sheet, place sweet potatoes and bake for 1 hour. Allow cooling. 

Step 3

Mash the pulp in a large bowl after scraping it out of the skin. Set aside. 

Step 4

Cream butter, sugar, and brown sugar together. Eggs, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cinnamon are all added at this point. 

Step 5

Add evaporated milk to the sweet potatoes and stir. Combine with a mixer and pour into an unbaked pie shell. 

Step 6

Bake on the bottom rack of the oven for 1 hour or until the pie is firm in the center. Serve hot. You may add whipped cream if you wish.

Maple Whipped Topping:

Step 1

Combine whipping cream and confectioners’ sugar in a medium bowl. Pour maple syrup over the top. Whip together until soft peaks form.
