Tubby Custard Recipe is a traditional custard recipe traditionally used in Scotland. It was brought to Scotland by the Vikings when they invaded in the late 10th or early 11th century. It is most often made with sweetened milk, but you can also use plain milk, yoghurt or cream. These are both healthier alternatives to butter or cream, which can result in a more custardy dish. It’s also sometimes called Fowling Child.
Bring the milk to a simmer in a big sauce pan. Whisk together the cornstarch, sugar, pinch of salt, and vanilla in a large bowl.
Step 2
Add the warm milk mixture to the starch and sugar mixture. Add a few drops of food coloring now.
Step 3
Using a whisker, mix well. Make sure you scrape the sauce pan well. As we will be reusing this saucepan, we must make sure that the entire pan is clean. It is recommended to use a wooden spatula when mixing.
Step 4
Return the pan to the stove. Reheat the custard mixture on medium heat.
Step 5
Using a wooden spatula, stir gently until the custard thickens. Make sure there are no lumps in the pan. When it is smooth, it will look velvety. You can serve it warm or cold.
